FIRST IMPRESSIONS. Kodi does nothing by halves. In school she works hard to stay at the top of her class, sacrificing nearly anything in the name of grades and success. To her friends, she's a tireless advocate who treads the line between 'defender' and 'overprotective.' (Okay, fine, she's mostly in that latter category.) To the rest of her peers, she's either a stickler for rules or a tireless party animal — depending on when in the week they catch her... and if they catch her during a sport, well, it was nice knowing them and their front teeth.

OVERPROTECTIVE. Kodi's drawn to people like herself — disciplined, ambitious, and steadfast. She treats her closest friends like family members and is a tactile person, often touching arms, holding hands, or hanging off her friends when she's feeling affectionate. She's also rather fond of her other squadmates and housemates, and she treats younger students like younger siblings so long as they stay on her good side. She feels like she's abandoning her family, siblings especially, when they need her most so she overcompensates by mothering everyone else around her.

She also tries to surround herself with people that balance her: calmer presences who suggest in juuuust the right way that maybe they should slow down for a little bit. This isn't so much an intentional thing as a subconscious need for the middle path influence and really it's that Temperance at work — something she needs to understand and embrace. This is also part of why she's such a clingy friend, as she thinks she's nothing without her close friends and she's probably right. She depends on them for too much a lot even though she'd never admit it since RAH RAH RAH SHE'S INDEPENDENT AND SHE'S THE RESPONSIBLE ONE, ALRIGHT???

She has no time for those who coast on names or fortunes, and even less for those who succeed only by debilitating the chances for those around them. When with friends, however, or during downtime (which has to be scheduled!), she's playful, with a corny sense of humour and even a mischievous streak. She has a tendency to take jokes or pranks too far and it can take her some time to own up to it.

JUSTICE!!! Kodi puts a lot of stock in her moral compass. If she doesn't agree with something, be it a rule that seems unfair or someone's treatment of another person, she won't hesitate to take action. Sometimes she does this by intervening with words and defending the worthy party. Sometimes she doesn't think words will fit and then she communicates with fists.

STUBBORN! SELFISH! Kodi's stubbornness runs deep enough to turn her into a hypocrite on a fairly regular basis, insisting "do as I say, not as I do" too often for it to be ironic. This isn't helped by her selfish streak, because although she can be selfless for her inner circle, most things in her life are done because she wants to, or because she deserves them — other people's feelings are rarely taken into consideration, especially if they're not a member of her aforementioned inner circle.

FEELINGS ARE FOR NERDS. OH WAIT. Similarly, it takes a lot for Kodi to show her vulnerabilities. When she does it's to one person, she's ashamed beyond belief, and she refuses to ever acknowledge this in real life; she thinks she needs to be the best role model for her younger sisters and brother and vulnerability has no place in that vision. Deeper feelings are bottled up until one day she finally vomits them (with words) onto an unsuspecting friend who probably didn't ask for them. This is also how she apologizes. It's not pretty.

JUDGEMENTAL. She's also quick to judge, and someone who mistreats a friend is likely to spend a looong time in the proverbial dog house, as she doesn't forgive easily either. When the forgiveness is something she's seeking—which is, holy shit, super hard to make her come to terms with and whoever made her do it should be made a saint—she sees it as a drawn-out and humiliating process and she'd rather die, tyvm.

SHORT TEMPER. She has one and it's: she needs to be the best and she leaves no room for her own failures. (This is elaborated on in her history.)

★★★★★ ACADEMICS: Does this count as a skill? If not it should. Kodi has a regimented schedule that allocates a lot of hours in the library. She does extra credit work at every opportunity and won't settle for any less than a 4.0 GPA. She reads ahead, her notes are meticulous, and she sacrifices fun for academics 99.999% of the time.

★★★★★ ATHLETICS: Kodi is a dedicated athlete. She took naturally to lacrosse, in which she plays attacker, but has also spent quite a bit of time playing hockey, baseball, basketball, and pickup football, and she's an avid weightlifter. (Please ask her about her macros.) She runs at an ungodly hour every morning and swims most evenings. She excels at strength and endurance, not so much at agility and speed.

★★★★★ FISTFIGHTS: This seems pertinent to mention. I promise it's only really relevant at home. This is how she deals with problems, also, often, feelings.

★★★★☆ FIRST AID: She even took the course!!! She doesn't trust anybody not to die without her!!!

★★★★☆ THE DOMESTIC ARTS... Kodi demanded to learn how to do everything at a young age, and especially since her mother passed away she's been learning and applying everything she can. She can mend clothes, fix basic household plumbing issues and deal with handyman needs (thanks, extended family!)

★★☆☆☆ ... EXCEPT FOR COOKING: No matter what Kodi tries, she is unable to cook. She's awful at it. The worst. She sets fire to scrambled eggs, she burns boiling water, she mixes up the sugar with the salt. She doesn't understand it but she tries SO HARD in Life Skills. When she finally does produce anything vaguely edible, her meals are known only for being nutritious and practical — never tasty. She never uses spices of her own volition, and when she finally decides to she ends up using the ones that get totally lost in the dish.

★★★★☆ KEG STANDS: You asked.

★★★☆☆ SPANISH: Her uncle has been teaching her for a few years and she took Spanish in school. She's determined to be fluent one day, she's just uh not there yet.

EARLY YEARS.
Born to former high school sweethearts Melvin and Zoe Hansen, Kodi was a precocious and curious child who grew up in a low-income neighbourhood surrounded by family of both blood and (social, not legal) adoption. She was curious, outspoken, and precocious from the beginning and was a dedicated student even in her earliest days.

Kodi was meant to be an only child; her oldest sibling, Mia, was an accident, but at least she was a happy one. She was the light of Kodi's life and the latter girl immediately demanded to learn how to help care for her sister. Her parents agreed—with plenty of supervision, of course—and even came to realize that "Hey, a bigger family isn't half bad"; cue three more children. It was a busy house and Kodi loved every minute of it.

10 YEARS: MOM'S DEATH.
Kodi wanted to be a doctor all her childhood. She wanted to help people! And heal people! And she was a bright kid so people were like "Yeah alright I see this happening!" buuut that changed on her tenth birthday. Her mother went to the store to get some more soda during the party prep and experienced an intracranial aneurysm in the carbonated drinks aisle. She died immediately and alone.

She had been Kodi's best friend and the girl was understandably devastated. It didn't help that her father was as well, nor that he had five energetic children to now raise on his own. It also didn't help that none of her siblings were old enough to really understand what was going on. Heck, she didn't, not really, but once she knew her best friend was never coming home everything changed. Melvin withdrew, going from an outgoing ultra-dad with a great sense of humour to a distant, worrisome father that could maaaybe even be described as a shell.

Cue Norma and Marco Ortiz. Norma, Zoe's fraternal twin and OG other half, and her husband, (you guessed it!) Marco, informed Melvin that they were now co-parenting. Melvin didn't want to for myriad reasons (grief, vulnerability, and similar fun stuff) but broke down (literally) and gave in (thankfully) after six months when he realized his children needed a healthy recovery and a healthy life, and he couldn't do it alone. And hey, maybe being openly vulnerable was a strength in itself. (It's important to note that while Melvin learned this last lesson, Kodi has not.)

Norma and Marco already lived a street over. Now both families moved out of their rental apartments and purchased a small house together so the aunt and uncle could co-parent for realsies.

TWEENS TO TEENS.
In the wake of Zoe's death, Kodi decides she needs to be even more just like her mother. Her unshakeable dreams change from becoming a doctor to becoming a high school science teacher. Luckily she's always been inclined toward the sciences. She wasn't just content with that, though, and is bent on being The Best Teacher. She wants to change lives. She should never have seen Dead Poets Society. She fills the hole left by her mother with schoolwork and goals, laying out her ultimate plan at the tender age of twelve: she'll kick ass in high school so she can get into a top university for science—fully funded, of course—then carry on to an Msc and a PhD, maybe even teaching university for a bit so she has Even Better Experience. Once she's got The Best Experience Doing The Best Things At the Best Schools she'll becoming a high school biochem teacher — The Best One, Obviously. She'll Inspire Students and Change Their Outlooks and Teach Them To Be The Best That They Can Be.

Kodi adopted a tireless work ethic to achieve these goals. She settles for nothing less than a 4.0 GPA and stellar references. She expects far more from herself than is reasonable and far more than is healthy. She also, you might have guessed, accrues a heck of a lot of stress as she tries to meet her expectations. And she doesn't know what to do with this stress.

Thankfully, Marco noticed this when she was in middle school and swooped in to save the day. He took that excess energy and that excess worry and helped her channel it into sports. After he introduced her to a whole whack of them she settled on lacrosse — and actually demonstrated a natural aptitude for it. Also for breaking bones.

FINCHWOOD.
A free private school with current, effective teaching methods and a good reputation for its potential? Uh, yes PLEASE. (And now it turns out that it's a school where they fight bad things? Uhhh that's kind of the best for Kodi?)

Of course, her admission to Finchwood was not without roadbumps. She's not okay with leaving her siblings because someone has to protect them 24/7. Then again, she's kind of protecting them by fighting Shadows, but still — it's hard to helicopter-older-sister while she's in Maine and they're not. She demands emails, texts, and Facetime calls with them a lot. Similarly, she and her father had just started restructuring their relationship this summer and she doesn't want to lose that progress. They text a lot. All of Melvin's texts end with "❤️ 🤓 LOL, YOUR DAD" because he thinks that "LOL" means "Lots Of Love." She gave up trying to correct him.

General Performance: As Kodi sees it, her entire future rests on her success at Finchwood Academy. She needs to get into the best college but can't afford any tuition — so she needs a full ride — except she can't play lacrosse at Finchwood so athletic scholarships are out of the question — so she needs to be absolutely the best in order for her future to work out precisely as she's planned it. (And she's planned it precisely.)

She's dedicated and determined. She won't settle for being any less than the best and prioritizes her academic success above everything else. Good news: she loves school and learning, and actually enjoys the long days studying in the library. She's an attentive student who participates in class. She doesn't tolerate time-wasters, in class or while she's studying.

Her favourite classes are Science, Training, and Leadership. Shop comes in a close second. because she likes working with her hands. She thinks Social Studies is kind of boring and annoying, and English is THE WORST EVER. (Flint Chambers is her long-suffering English tutor.) Thank god Philosophy isn't mandatory. She does well in Life Skills until she needs to cook.
